The Dreaded Candirú

I’m watching the silliest program.  Animal Planet is showing an episode of “Most Extreme” that’s about blood suckers, with a halloween-y tie-in to vampires.  Spooooooooooky…

So the number 8 or 9 creature is the candirú.  The only time I’ve ever heard of this thing was in the Venture Brothers episode “Are You There, God?  It’s Me, Dean.”  In the episode, the Monarch is about to drop them into the Amazon.  He is describing their eminent torture by “the dreaded candirú.”  Doctor Venture immediately dismisses the outrageous claims as myth.  And the claims really are so outrageous that I figured of course he’s right.

It turns out he’s not.  The candirú is a tiny inch-long fish that’s found in the Amazon river, and it typically feeds off the blood from the gills of fish.  It’s attracted to nitrogen, apparently, which leads it to be highly attracted to urine.  As such, it occasionally chooses human orifices over gills.

Holy crap, as if the Amazon wasn’t already frightening enough.

Komen 5k and a surprising surprise

Kia and I ran in the Susan G Komen 5k on Saturday morning.  I ran in it just over half an hour, which I’m really proud of.  Yeah, it works out to over 10 minutes a mile, but that includes the amount of time it took standing around waiting for everyone ahead of us to get started, etc.  I ran most of the distance, but since it started at 8:30, it was fairly hot as hell once we got out from the shade of the buildings.  We were both really drained by the time it was over.

Also, when it comes to handing out free crap, Miami residents are the most trifling, pushy SoBs I’ve ever had the pleasure of putting up with.  Wow.

The rest of the day was a nice, relaxed attempt to get our wits and our strength back.  :)

Sunday, after lunch and a small bit of running around, we picked up the mail and stopped for some coffee and tea.  In the mail, Kia got a package she didn’t think would arrive this soon, and couldn’t contain her excitement.  She was saving it for around Christmas, but gave it to me at the coffee shop.

It’s one of the sweetest, most thoughtful gifts I have ever received.  Perhaps THE most sweetest, thoughtful gift I’ve ever received.

Kia just bought her wedding dress on ebay for 36 bucks.

Now where am I gonna find one of those fancy tuxedo t-shirts?

[Edit: Forget it.  Shipping and tax brought the total to $55.  We got totally ripped off!  (kidding)]

Orange Brawl

Yesterday, we went to the big “cross-town rivalry” game between the University of Miami and Florida International University. My friends know I’m not much for sports, but my fiancee is studying at FIU, so I went to root for FIU. Before the game, they were 0-6 this season, so hopes weren’t very high. We were thrilled, actually, that FIU managed to keep UofM from scoring at all for quite a long time. I think they even made it to halftime with no points on the board. That’s impressive when you’re up against a team of the level that UofM is.

The game, actually, was a little boring until the third quarter when something happened that sent both teams down a steep spiral to an all-out brawl. All the benches were emptied, and players from both sides were sucker-punching each other. I saw one guy get thrown. Kia saw a UofM player go after an injured FIU player, who took a strong defense and hit the UofM guy with his crutch. When they finally got the whole thing broken up, a few fan fights broke out in the stands. The whole thing was crazy. 13 players were ejected, 8 of which were FIU players. The whole thing was seriously nuts.

It’s not great, and I missed the initial blows of the fight, but I did get part of it on video. For simplicity’s sake, I uploaded it to youtube. I can’t embed it below, so you can see it here.
