Getting Things Done is something I’ve written about before. I’m still having trouble implementing it, but I absolutely need to. Here’s the basic situation I’ve got:
- I don’t remember what I need to do when I have time to do it. As a result, I fall prey to default time-wasters, like TV, twitter, email, web.
- I have absolutely NO kind of “system” for capturing things when I think them. I have note cards, note pads, and gadgets. Too scattered to be useful.
- No “system” seems sufficient for me. Nothing is really capable of capturing everything. So I keep trying out new things.
- I really think I would benefit from some sort of mentor or at least support group (IRL, not on some web forum)
- A consultant doesn’t fit into the budget right now. See #4.
And there you have it. If you want to connect on this for some quality collaboration, you can try to work out my comments, or just drop me a line on twitter (see the left margin for a link) or gmail me. tcabeen for that.

There has to be some sort of notepad, to-do list, etc. in that iGod you run around with. Just pick a central spot to input your list and use that. I say the iGod since you take it everywhere.
Things is a terrific app. It’s just the iGod screen is too small for it to really be that useful. The desktop version, to which the iPhone version syncs, is crap-tastically expensive. My affliction is a lack of dedication to the cause (as with yoga, running, reading, cleaning, etc.
At least I’m consistent? :)
I couldn’t get into Things. I tried Omnifocus but it was TOO MUCH and I ended up letting it die.
Honestly, a stack of blank index cards attached by a binder clip (yes, the hipster PDA) and a pen for ubiquitous note-taking ability has been way more useful than the iPhone or any of the fancy-apps.
I make notes randomly and haphazardly, and then when I get some time I transfer them into the weird combination of 3mindme reminders, emails, and lists that I use to kind of keep on top of things.
I’m clearly not GTD complete mind you. :P
In the end it comes down to using LESS tools I think. Too scattered means using too many different things, probably?
I think that your support group plan is a good one. I’ve started many accountability clubs over the years with small groups of friends who were trying to push on projects (and be pushed).
